Luce Goods is a one woman company based out of dedicated bike town, Santa Rosa, creating one-of-a-kind cycling bags and hats made from vintage and recycled fabrics.
The idea for Luce Goods was born out of frustration – messenger bags were often too bulky and purses too impractical. In her own words:
My philosophy behind my products is simplicity.
I’m not a big fan of bags with lots of pockets, bells, and whistles. You never remember which pocket your stuff is in anyway..
In the end, simple products with simple lines end up being more functional – which is what i am after. Function.
I figure i make up for it with my materials, vintage fabrics, patterns with patterns, that sort of thing.
The bag came first. I wanted something small and simple that I could take around town. A messenger bag was too bulky and a purse would just swing around and hit me in the knees. Not functional.
It occurred to me that the classic musette was the perfect size but it lacked something to keep it from swinging around. So i redesigned the bag with the tabs and the carabiner to hook it into your belt.
Curtis Inglis and the Sycip’s came over to my house for dinner while I was in the middle of trying it out. They loved them. SSWC08 (Single Speed World Champs) was happening in Napa that year and Curtis was putting it on. So he gave me booth space and I made him a few as prizes for the race. That’s pretty much how it all started.
That same year Sean Walling came up to me at the Tour de California and asked me to make him some hats. I’d never made any before so I went home found a pattern and altered it to work. He ordered 50. It was awesome..
